Enlightenment Companies Holdings LLC Supports Electrical Safety Month

Cleveland, Ohio— May is National Electrical Safety Month and Enlightenment Companies Holdings LLC is joining with the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) to launch its annual effort to help reduce electrically-related fatalities, injuries, and property loss. This year’s campaign theme is “Understanding the Code that Keeps us Safe,” which features resources to help protect against common electrical hazards and highlights the importance of the National Electrical Code. “The NEC is updated every three years to include the latest in proven safety technology, and Enlightenment Companies Holdings LLC is committed to educating the public about the important upgrades that can help prevent shock and electrocution,” said General Manager, Tom Bielanski. An estimated annual average of 70 electrocution fatalities are associated with consumer products. Additionally, in 2016, 53% of all fatal electrical injuries occurred in the Construction industry.

The following resources seek to reduce these accidents and fatalities by promoting safety at home and in the workplace. Featured National Electrical Safety Month content includes an infographic titled “National Electrical Code: Understanding the Code that Keeps Us Safe” which explains the importance of the code and prompt adoption; “Electric Shock Drowning – Water and Electricity Don’t Mix,” uncovers the dangers of electrified water in pools and marinas; “Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories – Certifying Safety” explains the role of NRTLs in the electrical safety cycle; “Overhead Power Line Safety” provides eight steps to work safely around power lines; and “Workplace Fatalities and Injuries 2003 – 2016” covers the most recent data on workplace fatalities and injuries and demonstrates how accidents involving electricity compare. Electrical safety awareness and education among consumers, families, and employees will prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities.

For ESFI’s complete collection of National Electrical Safety Month resources and for information on using them in your community, visit www.esfi.org. Enlightenment Companies Holdings LLC is a national cost estimating firm comprised of three entities: Electrical Enlightenment, Mechanical Enlightenment, and Site Works Enlightenment. Founded in 2000, the firm provides high quality estimates for the electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and earthworks trades. For more information, please visit www.enlightenmentcompanies.com. About ESFI: The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May to increase public awareness of the electrical hazards around us at home, work, school, and play. ESFI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety.

It can be very rewarding to go the extra mile after you’ve submitted your bid by doing follow ups with the General Contractors. The Bid Follow Up: The GCs project manager will begin working through all of the subs contracts and could have room to negotiate with you. Your chances are even higher to negotiate if you have a good relationship with the awarded GC. Develop a relationship with the General Contractors! (*IMPORTANT*) Either go to their office to talk face to face or call and discuss how your company can help solve their issues. Tell them about the strengths and experience of your crew. Consider preparing a resume for your company, you could also utilize the AIA A305 form for a Contractors Qualifications Statement. Don’t wait to find out which GC won the bid. Call all of them. Start with the one you know the best first and ask about the project, numbers that are high, low, and if they know who the project was awarded to. Give congratulations to the awarded GC on winning the bid and begin to discuss when the GC will pick the sub of your trade. With your “sell price” in mind, ask the GC if you are in the running or considered for sub-award. Do not go below your sell price! Remember, the lowest bidder is not always the real “winner.” No matter the outcome of this project, do your best to get feedback from all the General Contractors. Ask:

Where your number came in compared to others

What is their confidence in your ability to complete the project

About labor availability

How you can improve your company

As an estimating firm and consultant to contractors throughout the United States and Canada, we hear many issues that contractors are facing. A topic we’ve heard contractors discuss more often than ever before is the headache of receiving incomplete or incorrect drawings from Engineers. We’ve heard it all… The specs don’t match the plans. The plans are not to scale. Material requirements have been completely left out. Missing drawings for part of the project. Addendum drawings are not bubbled. Recently one of our professional estimators was working on a hospital project and noticed the engineer called for a 200amp feeder that was fed with #1 wire which is only rated for 100 amps. The estimator re-engineered that feeder based on the load requirements of the panel and did the calculations to resize that feeder and qualify the bid for the change. The GC was then made aware of the issue as well. We all know the estimating process takes a huge chunk out of your already busy schedule, so adding drawings that seem more like a puzzle to can be a huge headache. Not to mention, you can lose a lot of time trying to communicate with the engineers and architects trying to piece together missing or inaccurate information. So, what’s the solution here? Estimators MUST be knowledgeable in regards to the National Electric Code and be able to identify issues that aren’t always so blatantly obvious. Contractors can use past projects in similar scope to review and compare the blueprints. This will help to recognize material and design needs for the job. A plan discrepancy can be handled by:

Making the GC aware of the changes needed and waiting for a possible addendum to be issued. It is very important to make the GC aware of why your number may be higher than your competitors if circumstances arise that increase your bid number.

Adding the necessary changes to your contract & proposal (write in bid qualifiers)

Securing the project for plans & spec bid and submit a change order later on. Make sure the contract does not contain a per NEC™ clause so you are not responsible for engineering errors – this could trump a change order and make you responsible for the error

What happens if you don’t catch on to any issues on the drawings?

The contractors competitors may make the necessary changes and be deemed to have higher expertise and become a favorable contractor to the GC.

The bid number could be WAY off and cost the contractor hundreds if not thousands.

In summary, the architect and engineer are following design standards that will not necessarily be well communicated on black and white drawings. The estimator must be knowledgeable enough to request information and qualify the bid to best identify the work to be performed.

As a construction business, bulk purchasing can be a highly effective strategy. Planning for bulk purchasing can get a bit cumbersome, but the long term rewards and impact on your profits could make the effort well worth it. Purchasing in high volume makes the most sense when the contractor is working on projects that use the same materials site to site. Package materials also can be grouped together such as lighting, distribution and other systems. Many of these supplies cost less the larger the order and the larger orders are easier to negotiate as well. For this strategy to be effective, the contractor should target and bid on similar projects and plan the use for the bulk purchased items. Those items that may be unique should be planned separately or purchased in bulk after securing a contract so billing does not falter for stored materials. It is very important to consider the costs associated with storing the inventory. These costs include having a building or rental space and also the cost of moving the materials time and time again. The bulk purchasing strategy requires the skill of maintaining inventories and setting aside job materials in a queue if you do not want your efforts to go to waste. Contractors that can manage bulk purchasing program can influence competitive markets and create nice work backlogs. Bulk purchasing can be a way to save in the long run and set your company apart from the competition. By: Ron Soltis
